WHY YOUTH RETREATS
Youth retreats are expensive, but they are worth every penny spent on them. This workshop looks at the youth retreat conceptually: what makes a youth retreat effective, how long a retreat should be, whether the retreat should be voluntary or mandatory, the relative merits of using an outside retreat director vs a parish team, the various roles of adult and peer leaders, the choice of a retreat center, the cost factor, and various retreat models and themes.
HELPING TEENS TO PRAY
This workshop focuses on the faith and spirituality of adolescents, and on how to help teens to deepen these through personal, group, and liturgical prayer. A variety of prayer experiences and faith-sharing activities will be presented. Youth retreats, and ways to make them truly faith-filled events, will be discussed.
"WE HAD ALL THAT": THE CATECHETICAL COMPONENT OF YOUTH MINISTRY
How do we teach the basic content of the Catholic faith to young people who are convinced that they’ve “had all that”? How can we engage their minds and hearts to think in new ways about the basic catechetical content of their faith: sacraments, incarnation, covenant, morality, sin, and grace? How do we teach the content required by the US Bishops’ Curriculum Framework in ways that will keep teens awake and even excite them? In this workshop Sister Kieran Sawyer shares some of the creative methods and techniques she has developed in her long years as catechist, teacher, youth minister, and youth retreat director.
